First Student Receives a Grant

Maimona was top of her class in primary school, but would never get to high school with out outside assistance. Maimona's older brother is the only one the family can afford to send to high school (boys get priority in a nation that has long been ruled by the chiefly system). Maimona's older sister was unable to go to high school. She stays at home, no qualifications and no prospect of a job. |
Maimona aks for simple things like an oil lamp so she can do her studies after dark. She doesn't get enough time to finish her homework, after she walks 2 miles home from school. We had to make arrangements for Maimona to be able to buy her lunch at school, as her parents had nothing to give her. Maimona didn't own a toothbrush, comb or mirror when we met her. She sleeps on the coral floor on a woven grass mat. There is no running water. Food is cooked over an open fire. There was not even a clock in Maimona's home. She had to guess the time of day by what was happening in the neighbourhood.
We have other students desperate to hear if they too can get an education grant. They are striving to do something with their life. Sitting under a coconut palm for the rest of their life is not an option they dream about.
